Day six- national museum, Chinatown and general KL wandering

Kuala Lumpur is growing on us more and  more. Discovering the different neighborhoods of the city is like flipping through the pages of an encyclopedia- every turn reveals something seemingly unrelated, but it all has an underlying uniformity in the way it's packaged.

In the morning we went to the national museum which is close to the central station. It was a great collection of Malaysian history. Each section was a snapshot of the country. It went from primitive tribes to the ancient kingdoms to colonization to the unification of modern Malaysia. Even though we didn't give ourselves much time in this museum, it was a perfect introduction to the country. It described the reason why it's such a multicultural country, predominately Islam, their system of politics and royalty and their struggle for independence. So cool.
After the museum, we headed over to KL's Chinatown for some lunch at their hawker stalls. Such a different area! The Chinatown is a jam-packed system of streets filled with shops, street food, temples and backpacker lounges. Here I had a delicious fried rice with crispy chicken along with a sweet lychee drink. So good!

We wandered the markets in the area for some time and scoped the souvineer spread. After, we walked to the old mosque which was unfortunately closed but a great spot for some photo ops.

Kuala Lumpur translates to "Muddy Estuary" as it was placed at the convergence of two rivers. This mosque is placed right at the y right in the place that they come together.

We then wandered until we were hungry again, passing through Merduka "freedom" square, the national mosque, and finally down to the Hindu temple, where we were lucky enough to see the silver chariot preparing to depart to the Batu caves a few hours later.

We'll describe more of this festival once we go to the caves on Friday.

We wound up the evening at the backpacker haven called the Regge bar. We made it in time for happy hour and Anna and I enjoyed a round of peach sheesha. It was such a cool spot and we all had a great time, despite the hazy details.
